Frederick Armine Cockburn’s Lock & Co. Top Hat 57cm – Grey Wool Felt with Original Box (c.1950s)

This beautifully preserved grey wool felt top hat was crafted by James Lock & Co, St James’s Street, London the world’s oldest hatmaker, established in 1676 and still operating from the same address. It once belonged to Wing Commander Frederick Armine Cockburn (1902–1981)  RAF officer, recipient of the U.S. Bronze Star Medal, and later Chairman of Cockburn’s Port and Master of the Worshipful Company of Distillers (1959-60). His name and address are still visible on the original Lock & Co. box, marked “F. A. Cockburn, Sandys, Fawley Green, Henley-on-Thames, Oxon.” Cockburn’s life perfectly bridged two worlds: the discipline of the Royal Air Force and the refinement of Britain’s post-war spirits and wine trade. To hold this hat is to hold a piece of that history ,the era of London clubs, gentlemen’s dinners, and the quiet confidence of a man whose name graced both the officers’ mess and the boardroom table of one of Britain’s most storied port houses. The height of the hat is 14cm Brim width is 5cm at the front Size: 57cm or imperial 7 Condition: This is a vintage used item and so there is some wear and tear. Excellent vintage condition minor age patina to interior, no moth damage. Box shows light wear consistent with storage. Vintage items are one off’s and are bought as described.
